Sorry it has been so long since the last post, and unfortunately it will be a bit longer. I'm transitioning into a new job and haven't had much time for flags. To satisfy my "huge" number of readers, I present a couple flags that I think are neat/weird.
Des Moines, Iowa, USA:
A simple flag that uses a shape (the arch) that isn't often seen. If I can find another place where the bridge imagery would fit, I'll definitely be using this flag as a template.
Fresno, California, USA:
With the exception of the word "Fresno," this is a nice flag. I particularly like the way the sun and gear balance the design. The earthy colors are good too.
Voronezh, Russia
I don't know what any of the symbolism on this flag means, but I still really like it. Plus, I'm a sucker for the Byzantine double-headed eagle.
Tampa, Florida, USA:
You're guess is as good as mine on this one.
Hum, I really like Fresno flag, it's like a model for me. Des Moines is good flag, too.
ReplyDeleteVoronezh is "weird", as you said.
The only problem with Tampa flag is that a lot of flagmakers wouldn't sew nothing with that shape. Ah, the seal too, but it isn't so bad.
Missed you. Good lucky in your new job.
I've just come across your site. I hope you publish some more articles soon. I can't say I like all the designs you favour but finding someone to discuss flags intelligently is a rarity. Your proposed design for a new Haitian flag reminds me of a silhouette of a very skinny night-club dancer from the 1940s, and the Tampa flag looks like a technical map of a railway system.
ReplyDeleteBut a seal or arms on a simple field is unoriginal, unimaginative and bland. I live in Alberta and this province suffers from the Nebraska flag-disease. What do you think of a coat-of-arms being turned into a flag (e.g. New Brunswick) rather than displayed on a flag?
